I have been using same Rechargeable Alkaline Batteries by Ray O Vac (RAB) I
bought a year ago for my portable radio (D cells), portable VHF and GPS (AA
cells). They originally cost about $ 5.99 for a 2 pack of D cells and same
for a 4 pack of AA which is about 15 - 20% more than regular Non Rechargeable
Batteries (NRB) and came with a free battery charger for 8 batteries. I am
happy to report these RAB's still recharge to original output of 1.639 - 1.67
volts (unlike NRB alkies that charge to less than 12 V.) I figure to date
these RAB's have endured over 150 hours of use apiece. With a maximum life
for regular non-rechargeable alkalines of 10 hrs for each item I figure I
have saved a minimum of 30 throw away NRB's or about $ 90.00. These RAB's
seem to keep charge as long as or longer than NRB's and can be recharged at
any time. You do not have to wait till they are dead to recharge as with the
other alkies (nickel cadmium, etc.).

You should all check to see if you can use these RAB's. They can save some
bucks that can be used for additions to vessel.
