It is the unit I use, and seems to be the most versatile...... I love
everything about it. If you want to load c-maps, you may want to check out
Lowrance products. Garmin just released a new gps product called the e-map.
It's cheaper than the III+, and boasts the same (and a couple more) features.
It's kinda cool, too. It isnt' waterproof (as if the other ones REALLY
are), but put inside a waterproof pouch, will work just fine. It allows you
to program your own chart cartridges using the Garmin mapsource CD ROMS.

Two unrelated questions:

1) Living in South Carolina, I will have the odd opportunity to get out
and sail when a warm spell hits this winter. As such, I will keep it in
the water at the lake throughout the winter. However, I was wondering
what winterizing steps and precautions I should take--it still gets well
below freezing at night sometimes.

2) Also, I am looking at buying a GPS. What do y'all recommend? I am
leaning towards the Garmin III Plus (?) and the Magellan 410. I am
interested in getting something I can load C-maps into. Is this worth
the cost?

I thank you in advance for your insights.
