Boat/US (page 14) also had an article on the VHF/cell phone debate. The
Coast Guard estimates 10% of mayday calls come in by cell phones. But they
stress that cell phones are not the best for this purpose. Four reasons:
they are point to point, they don't have the range, they are only as good
as their batteries and people seldom bring additional cell batteries...
and most importantly, radio directional finders will not work with cell
phones.
