In reply to Scott's e-mail below.....
My 1998 [ bought new ] Nimble - built Bay Hen-21 came with a smoked
plastic companionway hatch. I have since replaced it with a homemade
wooden one. The one-piece plastic slide-in hatch [ of unknown
composition ] was not only susceptible to cracking [ it eventually cracked
if half ]. The hatch was also highly susceptible to surface scratching.
Also...although the hatch was essentually opaque to outside observers
in the daytime, at anchor at night with a light on in the cabin, people
could look in and see me. Also for daytime napping it let in too much
light. I much more prefer my homemade one-piece wooden hatch with a clear
6 " diameter inspection plate for a portlight. The inspection plate cover
can be unscrewed and replaced with a bug screen.
As to teak plywood...as you probably know the teak outer layer will only be
a very thin skin. Be sure to use plenty of varnish or whatever to
prevent delamination.

>>>I am ready to make a new companionway hatch for the
boat, and I think I want to try the smoked
glass/plexiglass/lexan idea someone mentioned. What
is the best material for this use? Does anyone have
any idea where I could get a piece at least 30" x 25"
x 3/8"? I really don't know where to look. If I
can't use that, where do I get the same size in
mahogany or teak plywood? (Do they make teak
plywood?) I looked at Home Depot, but no luck.
Thanks very much for your help.
