If you made it adjustable on both ends with the fairlead block fixed to the
line with a splice or knot it could function very similar to a track, but
would require a cheek block (or two) for the fore end and an additional
fastening device reachable from the cockpit. You might even be able to place
the fore end outboard and the aft end inboard to compensate for varying wind
conditions for the jib set/furling.

I hope my crude drawing translates everyone's email and makes sense, the
