The old gunter rig Potters came with an x-shaped support, two sticks held
together with a single bolt near one end. The purpose was to support the
gunter yard and boom when the sail was lowered. It was not very practical
because there was no means to attach the lower end of the X to the boat,
and it would stay in place only if the mainsheet were cleated in tight. As
a result it was frequently being flipped into the drink. I installed a lazy
jack instead and quit using the X-support on the gunter rig.

Still, the method might have merit on a P19 if the lower ends of the
X-support could be attached to the seats or the transom, possibly with
hooks and eyes. With the two legs of the X swung together, it would stow
neatly.
