Years ago I had an interesting conversation with Herb Stewart the father
of the American Potter. He said one day he was sailing his P.14 over to
Catalina Island. The wind was good and he was on a beam reach, sailing next
to him was a large yacht. He was doing well keeping up with the big boat when
nature called. If he were to heave too, the big boat would sail away, so he
got out the porta potti and a trench coat.
A couple of years ago Carol and I were sailing my P.14 in the Oakland
Channel when she had to go. She sat the porta potti on the centerboard trunk
and stuck her head out the sliding hatch. She said she felt really silly, so
I told her to just wave at all the other boats. It was a real Kodak moment.
