Hi:

Either make a bracket or mount directly to the cockpit rail bolts protruding
into the cabin. No holes and reachable with minimal contortion. I'm not
sure what model I have but I just bought a small 'marine' fire extinguisher
and mounted it directly to the rear most bolt (1/4-20) of the starboard
cockpit rail of my newly acquired P-15 (#1044, 'Sukoshi'). The previous
owner of our P19 (#779, 'Wind Shadow' ) built a steel bracket to position the
fire extinguisher a little better and also mounted from the cockpit rail
bolt. I'll eventually remake the bracket out of aluminum or stainless.
Seems to work fine, but then I've not needed to use it and hope I never do.
If you do decide to mount to the inside of the companionway, just drill from
the outside (gelcoat side) using the mounting bracket as a template
<presuming the hole pattern is symmetrical -G> and seal with a little RTV
around the holes when mounting; there's no need to worry about peeling the
gelcoat, it's pretty tough stuff.
