RE: [WWP] Which is better for P15, gas or electric?

How far is home, and how rough is rough? I have been very pleased with the
results I have had with my electric It is the same set-up Dave Kautz
describes as anemic. And he is probably right. I can make headway into a 15
knot wind, but not much. It is an excellent alternative to paddling a mile
or two should the wind die. It would be a poor choice for motoring through a
heavy chop and high winds once you have decided to drop sails. It depends on
the conditions that you find yourself in. Short distances, relatively light
air: go electric. More variety in your sailing: stay gas. Two other points
to this debate not raised recently:

A battery takes a few hours to charge, but a small gas tank can be filled on
your way to the ramp (Of course no mixing oil with electric)

While I will concede that the more powerful gas motor is largely superior in
rough conditions, I do like the fact that I don't have to be hanging over
the transom, tugging on a rope for propulsion when it gets rougher. What
thrust you get is available NOW with a twist of the grip.

Any opinions out there for which motor is better for a P15? The gas
motor which came with my boat is in perfect condition but the shaft
is too short. I'm debating whether to spring for a new gas motor or
get a powerful electric instead. The lower cost and quiet of an
electric is appealing, but I do want something that will get me home
when the going is rough. (I owned a tiny electric motor in the past
for my dinghy and was disapointed---preferred to row instead.) Any
electric owners out there who are satisfied? Are the salt water
models worth the extra costs?
